ACHRA presented its second annual Human Resource Excellence Awards in September 2011. The recipients were The Boar’s Head Inn, Live Arts and its Artistic Director Search Committee, and Piedmont Pediatrics. In this facilitated discussion, attendees will hear from all three award-winning organizations as they share best practices and lessons learned through their efforts.
The Boar’s Head has a team of managers and supervisors with varying levels of experience, not just with people management of their own teams but also self development to learn more about their individual leadership styles and strengths. In the fall of 2010, the human resource team came together to create a program that would be presented over a 3-month period and would be a journey of leadership discovery for members of the management team. The program, titled “Discovering Leadership,” included a legal update, a presentation on internal HR processes, a review of KOLBE profiles and implications for leadership styles, and a two-part program on self development.
With the departure of Live Arts’ Artistic Director, the Board appointed a Search Committee to conduct a review of the theater’s leadership structure and conduct a comprehensive national search. After attracting 115 applicants, the search committee reviewed all applications and completed thorough screening and evaluation that included narrative questionnaires, Skype interviews, weekend visits and job previews, and discussion of candidates’ strengths using identified competency requirements. The search concluded with the selection of Julie Hamberg, who joined the Live Arts team on September 1, 2011.
Over a period of more than 2-1/2 years, Piedmont Pediatrics has undergone tremendous change in its approach to HR management. Previously, office concerns included unhappy and overworked employees, frequent turnover and communication issues. To address these concerns and the challenges of managing the administrative components of a busy medical practice, Piedmont Pediatrics focused on enhancing communication throughout the organization, redefining key management roles including a practice manager and a nursing manager, and strengthening the organization through operational improvements, team building, leadership training and ongoing coaching.
