Fall 2011 Study Group!

In the spirit of advancing the HR profession, ACHRA is excited to host the Fall Study Group for members who are interested in preparing for the PHR/SPHR certification. ACHRA has provided this professional development opportunity for several years. The Study Group is led by dedicated ACHRA members who are currently HRCI certified. These individuals volunteer many hours preparing and leading the participants in increasing their knowledge of the HR profession. Many of the participants credit their participation in the Study Group to their success in obtaining certification. Most importantly – the study group itself is free!

The Study Group Facilitators are volunteers who are certified members of ACHRA. The weekly sessions will begin on Tuesday, September 6th. Subsequent sessions will be held each Wednesday and run through Wednesday, November 16th. Sessions are scheduled from 5:30 p.m. – 7:45 p.m. at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO). NRAO is located on UVA Grounds, 520 Edgemont Road with ample parking in front of the building. The first session is being held on Tuesday to avoid a conflict previously scheduled ACHRA event.

The testing window for the upcoming exam period is December 1, 2011 – January 31, 2012. The registration deadline is October 7, 2011. Information regarding fees, eligibility and testing sites can be found on the HRCI website.

Each participant must be a member of ACHRA. In addition, ACHRA is required to adhere to the criteria established by SHRM regarding the usage of the SHRM Leaning System; thus, each Study Group participant is required to purchase the 2011 SHRM Learning System (no sharing). The discounted price is $510. ACHRA members may purchase the SHRM Learning System at the discounted price; however they must participate in the study group in order to be purchase the system at the discounted price. Checks (made payable to ACHRA, Inc.) must be received by Monday, August 15th. Participants have asked that we have the materials available prior to the start of the sessions so that they can review the material in advance.

As an incentive, participants who attend the sessions and obtain certification within the following two examination periods will be eligible to receive a $50 rebate to help with expenses associated in acquiring certification. As a Study Group participant, there is no requirement to sit for the exam. There are members who have participated in the past who have decided to take the exam at a later date.

HR Certification Institute’s New Eligibility Requirements to Take Effect in 2011

As we announced at the November SHRM Leadership Conference, the HR Certification Institute will be changing the eligibility requirements for the PHR, SPHR and GPHR certification exams.

In February 2008, the HR Certification Institute conducted an extensive multi-pronged study of the eligibility requirements of its three core products. Based on feedback from both certified and noncertified HR professionals, business leaders, students and academicians, the requirements will now include a combination of education and experience.   These changes will go into effect beginning with the May-June 2011 testing window.
